Pediatric osteopathy - when to start? and when is it necessary?

Today I want to answer one of the questions I get asked all the time by parents. So when is a baby ready for its first treatment? Well I love to reply like this: before it is born! In general some of the issues why babies are brought in for treatment may have already had their start in their mamas womb. So, especially because I am also specially trained in women’s health and do treat also a lot of pregnant women, this is my favorite answer.

It may help prevent birth related problems in the baby. However, even if we try to be as prepared as possible and opt for the most natural scenario, obviously we cannot always control everything that happens in a birth. So that is why it does make sense to perform an osteopathic exam on the newborn and there is really no day early enough. My answer usually is: whenever mummy feels ready to leave home with the baby and travel to the practice without putting anyone in a lot of distress. While the earlier the better is true in a way that catching compensatory mechanisms that can influence full unfolding of nature’s development forces, it is never too late to bring a baby, child, teenager in to see whether they can be helped with an osteopathic treatment. So what can osteopathy do for babies?

  • Improved Feeding and Digestion: osteopathic treatment may contribute to breastfeeding difficulties or digestive problems such as reflux.

  • Reduced Colic and Irritability: Osteopathy may be effective in reducing colic and irritability in babies.

  • Enhanced Sleep Patterns: Osteopathy may assist in improving sleep patterns in infants. By addressing musculoskeletal discomfort or tension, some babies may experience more restful sleep.

  • Support for Developmental Milestones: Osteopathic treatment can help support healthy developmental milestones in infants. By ensuring proper alignment and mobility of the musculoskeletal system, babies may achieve motor milestones on time or with greater ease.

  • Help overcome of Birth-Related Trauma: Babies who experience a traumatic birth, such as the use of forceps, vacuum extraction, or a breech birth, may benefit from osteopathic treatment. It can help address any musculoskeletal issues resulting from birth trauma.

  • Prevention of Cranial Issues: Osteopathy may help prevent or address cranial issues in infants, such as plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) or torticollis (neck muscle tightness). Gentle techniques can promote proper cranial development.

  • Enhanced Immune Function: osteopathic treatment may have a positive impact on the immune system. By promoting overall well-being and reducing stress on the body, infants may have better immune function.

It's important to note that while some studies suggest potential benefits, the effectiveness of osteopathy in treating infants can vary from case to case. Additionally, osteopathic treatment should only be administered by qualified and experienced professionals who specialize in pediatric care.
